Bookcase Progress: Tonight I finished cutting the oak plywood for the the two cases and got one side glued and nailed together. Hopefully between getting off work and going to DJ’s party tomorrow, I will get screws in this case and nail up the other one. Now if you know what you’re looking at here, you’ll notice that the grain of my shelves is running the wrong direction…I hate making mistakes, almost as much as I hate losing something. In this instance it’s not a structural issue like it would be if the case was make of solid wood that expands and contracts. The reason this is an issue is that when I add the solid oak strips to cover the exposed edges of the plywood, the grain of the shelf will be perpendicular to that of the finish strip and it will not look natural. So after some internal debate, I decided to go with them instead of dropping another $46 and 2 hours. It will not be that noticeable with the dark stain and books on the shelves but it still is what it is, a mistake. I learned the hard way that I can’t just jump back into the shop and work at the same speed I’m used to. Humbling but not fatal.
